Religion and Human Experience Essay
Hinduism can be traced back to ancient Aryan civilizations about four thousand years ago and is based on polytheism with various forms of rituals. Upanishads are documented texts which came about after probing the religion and finding ways of attaining spiritual insight from within and for life in general. Brahman is one who sees the divine as being one in all aspects and the Atman which is the soul reflects the oneness amidst diversity and reveals the Brahman in his true self. Maya on the other hand camouflages the truth of unity in mythical and magical shroud. Karma which is related to rebirth is stressed while Moksha is seen as freedom from and beyond all human aspects. The Bhagvad Gita brings out the practical elements of the religion in everyday life through four paths which can be practised together or separately to achieve spiritual satisfaction. The Hindu religion revolves around temples, rituals, polytheism and numerous festivals. Though many may worship a particular god or goddess they believe in all gods as being one in different forms. Priests and gurus are revered and looked up to as spiritual leaders. Animals are given importance as they are believed to be in the image of god this reflects in several gods having animal features. Symbolism is the basis brought out through art and sculpture. This rich culture of India has appealed to many around the world especially the yoga and meditations which have influenced people from every background. Religion and Human Experience 4 Jainism This religion is as ancient as Buddhism with Mahavir as the central figure and whose teachings are similar to Buddha, preaching abstinence and meditation to attain peace and ultimate freedom. This religion does not believe in godââ¬â¢s creation or being blessed by a Divinity, instead they believe in an everlasting universe full of life and pain as in humans. Though humans are considered special and can attain spirituality through compassion and knowledge of the inner self. The basic of Jainism is Ahimsa of which non violence is the most important followed by other virtues. Like most religions Jains honour 24 saints otherwise known as Tirthankaras who are looked up to and followed for their great accomplishments. Purification is part of being a Jain and life is considered a step in the path to eternal liberation from the human body through a life of good virtue and selflessness. Jainism teaches that to gain spiritual fulfilment one has to follow the path of strict non violence. It has five branches Digambaras, Shvetambaras, Sthanakavasis and Terapanthis. Sikhism This is a fifteenth century Indian religion with a background of Hindu Muslim conflict. The founder is Guru Nanak who believed in monotheism and oneness of God. He professed that even though there may be many forms and perception God is one whom he called ââ¬Å"True name ââ¬Å". His teaching was that God had no image and that he was beyond human insight while being the ultimate source of love, wisdom and righteousness. He taught social Religion and Human Experience 5 conscientiousness as part of the religion and the Sikh temples which are called Gurudwaras were open to all. The Sikhs follow and honor ten gurus, the first of whom was Nanak and the last being Gobind Singh who is the permanent guru and is said to have the soul of Nanak himself. Guru Gobind Singh was the founder of the military group called the Khalsa which followed five basic practices religiously. Today these five practices is what distinguishes the Sikhs from the rest, these include uncut hair and beard, Kangha a wooden comb, Kirpan which is a sword, Kachhera the under short which represents the readiness for battle at all times and Kara which is a steel wrist band representing the unity of Sikhs. This community stands out for its independence and strong unity which is their strength. Adi Granth is the holy book of the Sikhs and has verses and hymns written by the gurus themselves. This community has several festivals marking important events in the history of the Sikh religion. Religion and Human Experience 6 References Molloy Michael. 2008. Molecular Mass by Freezing Point Depression Essay
Analysis: 1.)Determine ___ for the solution of cetyl alcohol and of the unknown substance in BHT. 2.)Calculate the molality of the cetyl alcohol solution and use it to calculate the value of the freezing point depression constant,____, for BHT. 3.)Use the calculated value of ___ to find the molecular mass of the unknown solute. Discussion: 1.Give a definition of colligative properties. 2.Draw a phase diagram of a pure substance, and show how addition of a solute affects this diagram. 3.What is the least precise measurement? How does this limit your significant digits? 4.Why is it advantageous to choose a solvent that has a large value for ____? 5.Explain why the pure solvent shows a level horizontal curve as solidification occurs, but the curve for the solution slopes downward slightly. Conclusion: I answered the objective because I was able to determine the molecular mass of the unknown substance by finding the change in freezing point of BHT when the unknown substance was dissolved in it. I learned how to apply __fp and molality. Two errors that couldââ¬â¢ve occurred were timing the freezing pointà correctly and we might not have had one centimeter in the capillary tube. We didnââ¬â¢t know that we were supposed to stop timing after it started to become transparent, so our timings were all from when the whole centimeter of solution was transparent (except for trial 2). This would have affected our results by making our melting point temperature higher than it really should be. Since we didnââ¬â¢t have exactly one centimeter, the reader could have not seen when it first started. Thus, our time wouldââ¬â¢ve been higher than it should be too. Two improvements would be making sure we have exactly one centimeter or more in our capillary tubes and possibly just timing our results for a more

Is Climate Change Naturally or Man-Made? Essay
First of all, for anyone that does not know what climate change is, it is a change in the worldââ¬â¢s climate. A lot of people think weather and climate is the same thing but it is not. The difference between weather and climate is a measure of time. Weather is what conditions of the atmosphere are over a short period of time. Climate is what the conditions are over relatively long periods of time. My belief of the issue is that climate change is man-made. I think everyone has heard of global warming or an ice age, but does anyone really consider it to be a serious factor in the world? We only have one earth and once we destroy it, it is over. We have to do something about it because it seems like every year temperature records are getting broken because the summers are getting hotter and hotter and the winters are getting colder and colder. It would be different if the climate change was being made naturally but it is not, the majority, if not humans are causing all of the change. So, we have to do something about it. Extreme man-made changes in the climate are a very serious matter. There are many different reasons of how climate change is man-made. One of the main reasons is the increasing concentration of greenhouse gases. There are different ways of increasing the concentration of greenhouse gases such as burning fossil fuels like coal or oil and gas in your cars. ââ¬Å"Currently, burning fossil fuels emits about 6.5 billion tons of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere each year. Since before the industrial revolution, which, began in the 18th century, concentrations of greenhouse gases have increased by 30 percentâ⬠. (Torfaen) All of that carbon dioxide is eating away at our o-zone layer making it thinner and thinner. Another reason why our o-zone layer is diminishing is because we cut down all these trees for agriculture, space to build things, and wood to make things with. Trees absorb carbon dioxide through photosynthesis and the fewer trees that are there to absorb the carbon dioxide, the more carbon dioxide in the atmosphere. The effects of climate change depend upon how much change there is, how fast it occurs, and how easily the world can adapt to the new conditions. If the change is to rapid then that will leave some species of animals or plants to be extinct because they donââ¬â¢t have enough time to move or adapt. Other examples such as ââ¬Å"Coral reefs: slightly warmer tropical water may kill the algae which reef animals use for foodâ⬠.(Homeworktips) Increase in temperature in the climate is making a lot of the ice cap and icebergs melt in the north. Which is making the ocean rise more. ââ¬Å"Mangrove swamps: Mangrove swamps are important breeding grounds for many animals that live in water. Increased ocean flooding may damage these areas by changing the supply of nutrients and the amount of salt.â⬠(Homeworktips) What can we do about the climate change to prevent or reduce the effects? ââ¬Å"Three basic strategies are available, abatement, adaptation, and geo-engineering.â⬠(Homeworktips) Abatement is where we slow or stop the affect by making things more energy efficient. Burning less coal, oil and natural gases. Adaptation is where we adapt or change to our surroundings. Protecting the coast by putting up barriers or dykes. Geo-engineering is where we engineer or change the earth. For example, reducing the amount of sunlight that hits the earth by putting small particles in the high atmosphere to reflect more sunlight back into the earth. Things that an individual can do to reduce the chance of climate change. Choose a car that has better gas mileage, insulate your home better, carpool or drive less. Some other less effective but helpful action can be turning off unnecessary lights, plant trees, and recycle. ââ¬Å"If the average citizen undertakes all of these actions, they can reduce their carbon dioxide emissions by about 3%, which equals just over half a ton of carbon dioxide per year.â⬠(Homeworktips) Now some people believe that the reason of climate change is naturally made. These people do have some points but to say that it is more of a factor then humans is wrong (In my belief). Some of these points include volcanoes, continental drift, earthââ¬â¢s tilt, and ocean currents. Volcanoes can erupt and produce ash that will exceed into the stratosphere. The ash could combine with rain and make acid rain and kills crops but that is very minimal. Continental drift affects it because of the more land at the equator means more absorption, which means it will be hotter. Obviously the earthââ¬â¢s tilt has something to do with the climate change because the tilt is what makes out seasons. Ocean currents affect it because it takes far more energy to change the temperature or water then land or air. So the ocean insulates the costal climates, which means that the inland area is more subjected to extreme climate ranges. All those factors considered, that is still small being compared to all of the human-made factors. This one article talks about the radical decline in sea ice around the artic and being 70% humanââ¬â¢s fault. But then a new study was done and it could be 95% humanââ¬â¢s fault. The global warming that the humans are making is destroying the ice around the arctic. The loss of ice is affecting the wildlife such as polar bears and if nothing is done they will eventually die because they drown. They drown because they go swimming to look for fish and when they want to come back it is gone and then they drown because there is no land. There is a climate system called Atlantic multi-decadal oscillation (AMO), which was the dominant source of variability in ice extent. ââ¬Å"The AMO is a cycle of warming and cooling in the North Atlantic that repeats every 65 to 80 years ââ¬â it has been in a warming phase since the mid-1970s. There is something called the ice-albedo feedback, which means that when you have less ice, it means thereââ¬â¢s more open water and therefore the ocean absorbs more radiation and will continue to warm.â⬠(Guardian) Therefore saying all I have to say hopefully informed people about the climate and the different causes that change it. We only have one earth and once we destroy it, it is over. Extreme climate change is a very serious matter and should not be over looked. I guess you can say it is both but about 90-95% of the change is man-made.

Online Radio & Globalization Research Paper Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 2500 words
Online Radio & Globalization - Research Paper Example Commercial entities, instead of paying enormous amounts of money for radio advertisements, and sponsoring target programs, can develop content that attracts and retains an audience (Kozamernik, & Mullane, p. 13). Internet radio has an immense impact on globalisation because it targets a wider global audience, and can influence commerce and culture. Internet radio does not only impact on globalisation but it also impacts on commercial trends. It impacts on advertising, management, production, marketing and radio listenership. With the advent of internet radio, business shifted their attention to seeking for advertising space in online radio because of its international nature. Online radio also changed radio listenership; international listeners could tune in to an online station and listen to music that may not be available in their local radio stations. This means that expatriates can listen to radio stations from their native countries, and in a way influence the locals to listen t o this radio stations. Online radio is also appealing to the youths who are internet savvy and compose the highest number of radio listeners (Kozamernik, & Mullane, p. 18). Radio incorporates signal transmission in space using electromagnetic waves that have frequencies below visible light. This waves, electromagnetic waves, travel by oscillating electromagnetic fields in air and vacuum space. ... Ships used radio by sending Morse code to land in 18th century. The importance of radio came to the fore during the sinking of the RMS Titanic. Operators on board the Titanic communicated with nearby vessels using radio. During the First and Second World Wars, radio gained immense usage by the navies and the armies (Kozamernik, & Mullane, p. 5). Commercial radio broadcasting in 1920s changed the landscape for radio usage. Besides, radio program relay, point-to-point broadcasting and telephone messaging became widespread in 1920s. Presently, radio has taken many forms, which include mobile communication, wireless networks and radio broadcasting. Commercial radio broadcasting includes music, news, comedies, dramas, variety shows and numerous forms of entertainment. During the golden age of radio, it gained uniqueness as a method of presentation because it only used sound. Technological developments brought other means of mass media, and the currently, online based services takeover fro m some of the services that people used to enjoy. Internet or online radio is growing in acceptance and may overtake conventional radio within no time. Internet radio has changed aspects of radio such as advertisement, its globalization role, listenership, production, marketing, education and entertainment (Kozamernik, & Mullane, p. 7). Internet or online radio uses the internet to transmit audio services. Internet radio primarily involves streaming media, which presents listeners with non-stop audio streaming. This means that the audio stream cannot be replayed or paused but can be stopped. Internet radio is similar to conventional radio, but the difference is in the mode

Freedom of Religion Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1250 words - 1
Freedom of Religion - Essay Example The research paper investigates the stand of the judicial system of the US and the federal government in the interpretation of the free exercise clause when confronted with different aspects of the freedom of religion as enshrined in the US Constitution. The Free exercise clause explicitly prohibits the US government from interfering with the religious choice of each individual. The Clause also bars the US government from invading various religious practices that do not pose security threats to the country. The free exercise clause forbids the US government from forceful recruitment of citizens into particular fields believed to contradict individualsââ¬â¢ religious standing. The clause further allows individuals to make their own decisions and choices regarding the type of religions in which they desire to belong. The Supreme Court of the US applied the principles of the free exercise clause to grant the Amish community the request of terminating the education of their children a t the eighth grade of education. The Amish in their status felt satisfied and tended to derecognize the needs for furthering the education of their children. In this case, the Amish community was granted request on the basis of their religion, which deemed it unfair for states to sponsor their childrenââ¬â¢s education while they were economically stable. The Free Exercise Clause also accredits parents the right to choose and decide on the appropriate schools that comply with their individual religious beliefs.
